1 – No Chemicals
The top item on my list of reasons why I am fond of all the work I do in the kitchen for JamBusters! is that whatever I preserve and sell is a jar filled with lots of things but one thing you won’t find is a list of chemicals, additives or other ingredients with long names that sound like a science project. All-natural, sometime organic but with no added bad stuff.
2 – Year Round Goodness
There is nothing better than having a spring morning flashback when I pop open a jar of cherry jelly or something with blueberries in it. The best part is when I do this in January. With the way in which canning actually preserves the contents in a jar, you can virtually extend the season of all your favourite fruits and vegetables. This is especially important in colder climates where growing season is short but with canning you get to enjoy your favourites long after the ground has been harvested.
3 – Costs And Savings
What I enjoy a lot about canning is that the supplies are relatively inexpensive. Even if I was just preserving for myself or family and friends, it’s still a pretty cheap way to keep locally-grown food on the table. In the case of my JamBusters! vending, the cost of supplies is even more crucial as I produce items for resale. Regardless, I can charge fair and affordable prices for my products and still save on my expenses because the costs get covered by customer purchases.
Seriously, who wouldn’t want to enjoy something from their backyard when the garden is buried under a foot or more of snow? There’s nothing like it and that is one of the many reasons why I am so excited about the benefits that come from canning and preserving. I’m sure that once you give it a try you will agree, there is no better way to feed your family than with produce you can store all year long that you’ve grown yourself or purchased from a local grower.
